A new fence can make your yard more private, safer, and better looking. If you want to build one yourself, here’s a quick guide to help you do it right.

- Dust mask when cutting treated lumber

Step 1: Plan Your Fence Line
Decide where your fence will go and clear the area. Use stakes and string to mark a straight line and space posts about six to eight feet apart. Check your property line and call BC One Call before digging so you don’t hit any buried utilities.
Step 2: Set the Posts
Use pressure-treated 4×4 posts for strength. Dig holes about two feet deep, add gravel for drainage, and set the posts in concrete. If you’re building on concrete, use metal post brackets instead. Make sure each post is straight and lined up with your string before the concrete sets.
Step 3: Attach the Rails
Connect the posts with 2×4 pressure-treated rails, one near the top and one near the bottom. Use exterior screws and check that they’re level. Rails keep the fence sturdy and help your boards stay straight later on.
Step 4: Add the Fence Boards
Attach 1×6 boards vertically along the rails. You can butt them together for full privacy or leave small gaps for airflow. Use two screws per rail and keep checking for straight lines. Leave the wood natural until it dries, then stain or seal it later.
Step 5: Install or Adjust the Gate
Make sure your gate lines up with the fence and swings freely. Add a small extension at the bottom if you have pets that might slip under. Secure the hinges and latch tightly so everything stays solid.
Step 6: Finish Up
Add post caps to protect against rain and moisture. Trim any uneven boards and clean the area. Let the wood dry for a few months before applying stain or sealer for long-term protection.
